A slow-draining bathtub is more than just an inconvenience—it can be a sign of a growing clog in your plumbing system. Before you call in a professional, try these tried-and-true methods to get your drain flowing freely again.
1. Remove Hair and Visible Debris
Hair and soap scum are the most common causes of bathtub clogs. Start by removing the drain stopper and checking for any visible gunk. Use gloves and a wire hanger or tweezers to pull out the debris. It’s not glamorous, but it often works.

2. Use a Plunger
Yes, you can plunge a bathtub drain! Fill the tub with about an inch or two of water, enough to cover the bottom of the plunger. Place the plunger over the drain and plunge firmly 15–20 times. Be sure to cover the overflow drain (the hole under the faucet) with a wet rag or tape to create a good seal. This method can help dislodge clogs that are stuck just out of reach.

3. Pour Boiling Water Down the Drain
Boiling water can help melt and move along soap and grease buildup. Slowly pour a full kettle of hot water down the drain and see if it speeds up the drainage.
4. Try Baking Soda and Vinegar
Pour ½ cup of baking soda followed by 1 cup of vinegar into the drain. Let it sit and fizz for 15–20 minutes, then flush with hot water. This natural method helps break down organic materials and clears minor blockages.
5. Use a Drain Snake
If the above methods don’t work, a drain snake can reach deeper into your pipes to pull out stubborn clogs. These are inexpensive and available at most hardware stores.

If your bathtub is still draining slowly after trying these methods, it might be time to call in the pros.
